What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves moving hair follicles from one part of the body, often the back or sides of the head, to areas experiencing hair loss or thinning. This method aims to restore a fuller head of hair by utilising the patient's own hair, which reduces the risk of rejection. The procedure can be performed using different techniques, such as follicular unit extraction (FUE) follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or direct hair implantation (DHI). Results typically become visible over several months, providing a natural-looking solution to hair loss.

FUT Hair Transplant

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) is a hair restoration technique that involves removing a strip of scalp from the donor area, typically at the back of the head. The strip is then dissected into individual follicular units, which are carefully implanted into the balding or thinning areas of the scalp. This method allows for a large number of grafts to be transplanted in a single session, resulting in natural-looking hair growth. Recovery time can vary, but many patients see significant results within a few months as their hair begins to regrow.

With its invention dating back to the 1960's and 1970's, except in very rare circumstances, these types of procedures are no longer used.

FUE Hair Transplant

FUE has been the most popular hair transplant technique that involves the extraction of individual hair follicles from a donor area, typically the back of the head. During the procedure, these follicles are harvested using a specialised tool and then meticulously implanted into areas of thinning or balding. This method is minimally invasive, results in minimal scarring, and allows for a natural-looking hairline. Many patients appreciate the quick recovery time and the ability to return to their normal activities after the procedure.

DHI Transplant

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is an advanced hair transplant technique that utilises a Choi pen for the implantation process. This allows for precise and efficient placement of hair follicles directly into the scalp, ensuring a natural look and minimising damage to surrounding tissue. With the Choi pen, the surgeon can control the angle and depth of each follicle, resulting in a seamless integration with the existing hair. Overall, DHI with a Choi pen offers a minimally invasive solution for those looking to restore their hairline.
